Bonhams Auction of Roy T. Eddleman Collection Supports Quantum Science Education
In a remarkable fusion of art, science, and philanthropy, Bonhams Los Angeles presented the auction of the Roy T. Eddleman Collection on June 14, 2023, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Eddleman Quantum Institute. The sale featured a once-in-a-generation assemblage of rare antiquities, fine art, and scientific artifacts curated by the late Roy T. Eddleman—entrepreneur, inventor, and passionate patron of both science and culture.
The collection, drawn from Eddleman’s residences in Beverly Park and Amapola Lane, included:
Georgian furniture and decorative arts
Paintings of alchemical and scientific subjects
Meissen porcelain and Chinese export ceramics
A limited-edition Steinway grand piano
George IV silver wine coolers and American sterling flatware
Eddleman’s lifelong fascination with science and history shaped his collecting philosophy. His acquisitions reflect a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and intellectual heritage, spanning from the ancient world to 19th-century Europe. Bonhams meticulously archived the collection to preserve its cultural significance and showcase Eddleman’s legacy as a student of history and a visionary supporter of quantum research.
The auction proceeds directly fund the Eddleman Quantum Institute, which supports cutting-edge research, education, and operations in quantum science across UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and Caltech. This unique philanthropic model bridges the worlds of art and science, ensuring that Eddleman’s passion for discovery continues to inspire future generations.
